Extension to Undergraduate Educational Program (S1)

The Extension Program for Bachelor of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia is an extension program based of the regular Bachelor of Engineering Program. It is part of the Faculty's establishment educational program in supporting qualified engineering practitioners to reach their bachelor degree. Although it is based on the regular program, the extension program has several operational adjustments and is under direct supervision by the Faculty.

Extension Program in Electrical Engineering was started in February 1993, with the approval letter no. 2346/D/T/1993 from the Director General of Higher Education, Department of National Education, Republic of Indonesia.

The founding of Extension Program for Bachelor of Engineering was approved by the letter of declaration from the Rector of University of Indonesia No. 129A/SK/R/UI/1995 and from the General Director of Higher Education, Department of Culture and Education, Republic of Indonesia, No. 199/DIKTI/Kep/1996.

This program is a course work program given in credits (credits) consist of lectures, discussions, lab. practice, seminar and the completion of small thesis. Classes begin at 16.00 in the Campus of Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia, Depok supported by library, computer center and Laboratories for each study program. Its curriculum is based on the regular program curriculum. Thus, students will be admitted directly to the 3rd semester to conduct their 3 years study or 74 sks (credits). For early semesters, courses are emphasized on the fundamental principles studied at the department. In the later stages, the students may choose one of the four majors: telecommunication, control, electronics, or electrical power.

Undergraduate Educational Program (S1)

The undergraduate program is aimed to produce graduates with the ability to analyze problems, to find and to propose logical, systematical and practical solutions that are supported by sufficient approach and methods. Students are also supposed to be able to design and develop both software and hardware, and keen to keep up with the latest technology.

The graduates are well admitted in many fields of engineering by the industries such as: telecommunication industry, infomation technology industry, electronics related industry, electrical power industry and others. In the last results of graduates’ tracer program conducted by the department, the average waiting time before acquiring the first job by the graduates of Electrical Department FTUI is 2 - 3 months. This fact has talked by itself on the well being of the graduates competitiveness. Furthermore, many of the graduates are admitted before they are officially graduated.

Enrollment Criteria:

* A high school graduate (SMU) majoring in Natural Science
* Pass the entrance examination SIMAK UI, SNMPTN or via PPKB, PPMM or other selection process

The Faculty of Engineering

Engineering
The history of the UI’s Faculty of Engineering (FT UI) began with the offer made by several young engineers belonging to The Union of Indonesian Engineer (Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia or PII), to the Indonesian first president Bung Karno to repair the damages in Jakarta’s main street. At that time the capital city was preparing it self for the up-coming International Sports event, The Ganefo. This offer was well received by the president. It was a rare opportunity but the assignment had to be completed in 2 weeks time. Fortunately under the supervision of Ir. Slamet Bratanata, Ir. Roosseno, Ir. Sutami and Ir. Soehoed the team managed to complete the tasks in time.
After finishing the task of repairing Jakarta’s street, these young engineers with steel spirits in their heart felt that there were more things to be done. But what? From there emerged a bright idea “why don’t we build a faculty of engineering right here in Jakarta, so people don’t have to go far away to Bandung to study engineering.”

During the Lenso dance party in Gedung Pembangunan (at that time it was called Gedung Pola) to honor The Ganefo special guests, these young engineers proposed the ideas to Bung Karno. His reply was short; “Meet me at the Palace tomorrow”. True enough when they met the president the next day, he immediately gave his consent and went even further by appointing Prof Ir. Rooseno as the first Dean of the Faculty of Engineering right there on spot. Bung Karno also requested that the new faculty of engineering should be under the auspice of the Universitas Indonesia whose Rector at that time was dr.Syaref Thayeb

FTUI was born
When Dr. Syaref Thayeb became the Minister for Higher Education and Sciences (PTIP), he issued a decree number 76 dated 17 July 1964 regarding the establishment of a Faculty of Engineering. Hence, under the Universitas Indonesia, without any ceremony, the youngest faculty, The Faculty of Engineering (FT UI), was born.

At the first stage Civil, Machinery and Electro Departments were opened. Ir. Sutami was appointed as the Head of The Civil Department, Ir. Ahmad Sayuti as the Head of the Machinery Department and Ir. K. Hadinoto as the Head of the Electrical Department. The following year the Department of Metallurgic and the Architecture Department were opened. Dr. Ing Purnomosidhi H was appointed as the Head of the Department of Metallurgic and Ir. Sunaryo S was the Head of the Architecture Department.

Ir. Roosseno served as the first Dean, assisted by Ir. Sutami as Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs and Ir. Slamet Bratanata as the Deputy Dean for Administration and Finance and Dr. Ing. Purnonosidhi H as the Deputy Dean for Students and Alumni Life. In its early activities FT UI was supported by 30 staff lecturers and 11 non-academic staff and it offered 32 subject matters.
In those early years the number of students enrolling was surprising. There were 203 men and women who applied. Out of those numbers, 199 passed the test and were accepted as the first Faculty of Engineering students. In the next period of five and a half years, 18 of them successfully completed their education and graduated as Engineers.

In 1985, The Gas Engineering Study Program from The Metallurgic Department was merged with The Chemical Engineering Study Program from The Machinery Department and became The Gas Engineering and Petrochemical Department headed by Dr. Ir. H. Rachmantio. In 1999 the newest department, The Industrial Engineering, was opened with Ir. M. Dachyar MSc. as its head.

Current Departments and Study Programs offered in FT UI
FT UI consisted of seven Departments which managed the academic resources of eight Study Programs in an integrated study plan based on a technical curriculum:

* The Department Civil Engineering/ Civil Engineering Study Program
* The Department of Machinery/ Machinery Study Program and The Department of Ship Engineering/ Ship Engineering Study Program
* The Department of Electrical Engineering / Electrical Engineering Study Program
* The Department of Metallurgic and Material Engineering / Metallurgic and Material Engineering Study Program
* The Department of Architecture / Architecture Study Program
* The Department of Chemical Engineering/ Chemical Engineering Study Program
* The Department of Industrial Engineering / Industrial Engineering Study Program

There is also Opto-electronics and Laser Application which is an FT UI graduate program. The Department of Machinery is the only department with more than 1 study program.

VISION
To become an excellent engineering educational institution that is able to compete at the international level.

MISSION

* To prepare graduates who are able to learn continuously and who poses the ability to adapt to the working-world with ethics and spirit of leadership;
* To become a center for education and research while keeping the stake-holders aspirations forward through supportive work environment which encourages the performance of all civitas-academica;
* To become a leading institution that is responsive towards the public, both nationally and internationally.
